Caring for Your Baby in the Summertime: Keeping Bub Cool and Safe

How to keep your baby comfortable, hydrated, and protected during the summer months

Summer in Australia means plenty of sunshine and outdoor fun, but the heat can be tough on little ones. From keeping them hydrated to protecting them from the harsh sun, here’s a guide to caring for your baby during the warmer months.

1. Keep Up the Fluids

Babies can become dehydrated quickly in the summer heat, so staying on top of hydration is key. You might notice they want extra feeds on hot days. Breastfed babies may need more frequent feeds, while formula-fed babies could benefit from smaller, more regular bottles. Watch for signs of dehydration, like fewer wet nappies, a dry mouth, or a sunken soft spot on the top of their head. Make sure they’re getting enough fluids to stay hydrated. If you have concerns about dehydration, check in with a doctor sooner rather than later. And if you’re breastfeeding, remember you need to keep up your own fluids too—staying hydrated is important for both you and your milk supply.

2. Sickness Doesn’t Take a Summer Break

Just because it’s warmer doesn’t mean babies are in the clear from getting sick. Summer brings its own set of bugs, so it’s important to stay vigilant. Viruses like hand, foot, and mouth disease are still common. Practise good hygiene and be mindful in crowded places or around people with symptoms. Keep an eye out for any signs of illness, like a fever or rash, and don’t hesitate to reach out for medical advice if needed. All the same care principles for looking after a sick bubba in winter apply in summer. Focus on hydration, their breathing, and any behavioural changes you’re concerned about.

3. Avoid Non-Breathable Pram Coverings

While it might seem like a good idea to block out the sun or keep things dark for your little one’s nap on the go, covering the pram with a blanket or cloth (even breathable ones) can trap heat and make your baby too warm. Prams meet strict safety standards, but accessories like pram covers don’t undergo the same testing, so they might not be the safest choice for sun protection. Red Nose advises against using pram covers that block airflow. Instead, try using a battery-operated fan and a lightweight, moist muslin cloth on warm days to cool things down by up to five degrees, all while still opting for shade or avoiding direct sunlight. If you’ve got a pram insert, just be aware that it can add extra warmth, and you might need to remove a layer from your little one to keep them comfy.

4. Keep Bub Out of Direct Sunlight

Babies have delicate skin, so keeping them out of direct sunlight is crucial. Use natural shade or bring along a sun tent when you’re out and about. Remember to protect their eyes too—babies’ eyes are sensitive to UV glare, and even reflected sunlight can be harmful. Sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat are excellent for added protection. Last summer, we had a rough experience when our little one got sunburnt eyes from the glare off the water while we were walking nearby—it was incredibly painful for him.

5. Use the Right Sunscreen

When choosing sunscreen, remember that not all products are ideal for young babies' skin. For babies under six months, zinc-based sunscreens are generally the safest option, as they’re less likely to irritate sensitive skin. Zinc oxide acts as a barrier on the skin and is a reliable option for sun protection. Always do a small patch test on their skin before applying it more widely, and reapply regularly if you’re spending extended time outside.

6. Dress Your Baby for Warm Nights

Dressing your baby comfortably for sleep on warm nights is essential to help them rest safely. TOG-rated sleep sacks can guide you in choosing the right layering based on the room temperature, and as a general rule, newborns often need one extra layer compared to adults. So, if you’re going to bed in light summer pyjamas with just a sheet, your baby might need a long-sleeve onesie and a thin sleep sack.

I personally love Grow Kindly’s range of TOG-rated baby sleepwear and sleeping bags. They have a beautiful selection designed for every season, and their clever app provides personalised recommendations for dressing your baby based on the room temperature. Download the app here.
